Keynote
By listening, we can improve the health of our planet and our open source communities. The Miyawaki method of reforestation offers a quick way to create healthy woodlands in challenging environmental conditions. Shelley Lambert uses this method as an analogy in her keynote "Listening to a Forest to Improve Community Health" and encourages us to be open to projects and cultures. As a Senior Principal Software Engineer at Red Hat and PMC member at Eclipse Adoptium, she leads projects and is a committer on several.
Interesting Lectures
The popularity of APIs leads to increased attacks, often due to design flaws such as weak authentication or lack of authorization, which makes them easy targets for an attack. The presentation "Alle Eure APIs gehören mir - rund um die API Sicherheit" by Andreas Falk covers typical steps a hacker takes when finding, analyzing and hacking APIs. He explains the updated OWASP API Security Top 10 of 2023 and discusses defense strategies for developers. Using a Java application he demonstrates common standards, utilizing REST and GraphQL.
Automated tests need to be fast, so often only parts of the application are tested by hiding them or simulating predictable behavior. Mocking is commonly used for this, whether for unit or integration tests. However, mocks are controversial. Some consider them fragile and high-maintenance, others consider them indispensable. So how should new tests be written? Are mocks still necessary at all? In his presentation “Mocks, Fakes, Stubs – ist da ein Unterschied? Braucht man das noch?”, Thomas Much will present different types of test doubles and look at their effects on test maintainability and stability and how to use them appropriately. A brief look at the new concept of "Nullables" will complete the session.
Community Activities
The "JavaLand4Kidadults" is all about motorsports. You can build your own racing car from bricks and compete with other teams in a race. Various sets such as Lego Wedo, Lego Mindstorms EV3 and Apitor Robot X are available for building. You can either use the existing software or program your own app for control. After qualifying on a straight of around 5 meters, the final race follows, where the aim is to reach the top step of the podium.
In his workshop, Frederik Hahne will introduce you to HTMX and explain how you can use it in the Java environment. To do this, he will build an application with Spring Boot, Quarkus or Micronaut and HTMX. Don't miss “HTMX und Java”!
Training Sessions
In the digital era, APIs are crucial products that can influence the success of business models. The training session "API Thinking: Effektive und nutzerfreundliche APIs entwerfen" by Daniel Kocot and Sebastian Tiemann covers the concept of "API Thinking" and shows how to develop APIs in a user- and business-oriented way. They cover the creation of user profiles and usage scenarios, monetization, API ecosystems, security and more.
If you're faced with a large codebase and time-consuming code refactorings, updating libraries and adding license headers could become a pain. OpenRewrite is a solution that helps you automate these tedious tasks. In the session "Automated Code Refactoring with OpenRewrite" by Sebastian Konieczek you will learn more about the tool and how it can help you with automated code refactoring. It shows how it can be integrated into a project and what the results look like using a sample Java application.
You can find more highlights for all categories in our agenda. There you can also mark your favorites with a star and build your own schedule. This way, you will not miss any of your personal highlights. Further highlights will be presented shortly. Stay tuned!
